Warning notice: "Richard Kent" email scam
December 23, 2016
The Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) is issuing a warning about a spam email using the fsco.gov.on.ca domain and email address email@example.com, which has been transmitting a computer virus to unsuspecting members of the public.
The spam email appears to be sent by a FSCO employee named Richard with the email address firstname.lastname@example.org, and also appears to be sent to the email address email@example.com. The two email addresses, firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com, are not authorized FSCO email addresses. Also, this spam email is not being sent by FSCO or any member of its staff.
The spam email informs the public that they have been subpoenaed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and includes a link attached to the email called "FTC Subpoena". The link is believed to contain malicious software, which could infect a computer when an unsuspecting individual clicks on it.
The spam email also states that Richard Kent is a Senior Accountant with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). At this time, there are no records of a person named Richard Kent employed by the FTC as a Senior Accountant, and there is no connection between FSCO and the FTC.
Members of the public should exercise caution if they receive an email from firstname.lastname@example.org and should not open the email. Instead, recipients of the email are encouraged to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
